Neeraj Chopra, the reigning Olympic and world champion in javelin throw, finished second in the Diamond League 2023 final with a best throw of 83.80m. Czech Republic’s Jakub Vadlejch won the title with an 84.24m throw.
Chopra began the competition with a foul, but then registered a throw of 83.80m on his second attempt. He fouled on his next two attempts, and then threw 81.37m on his fifth attempt. His final throw of the competition was 80.74m.
Vadlejch, on the other hand, started the competition with a massive throw of 84.01m. He then fouled on his next two attempts, but registered a throw of 84.24m on his fourth attempt. His final two throws were fouls.
None of the other athletes in the competition were able to cross the 85m mark. Finland’s Oliver Helander finished third with a best throw of 83.74m. Andrian Mardare (81.79m), Curtis Thompson (77.01m), and Anderson Peters (74.71m) finished fourth, fifth, and sixth respectively.
Chopra’s second-place finish in the Diamond League final is a respectable result, given that he has had a busy season. He won the world championships last month, and has also competed in several other Diamond League events.
However, Chopra will be looking to improve on his performance in the Diamond League final next year. He is still the world’s best javelin thrower, and will be aiming to win his second Diamond League title in 2024.
